My being a member of the Beer of the Month Club came about in an odd manner.Join the Beer of the Month Club - Click Here My wife had bought me a membership to the Cigar of the Month Club since I am an avid cigar smoker.

I originally did not think I would enjoy the membership and really didn't think the quality of the cigars would be very good. But as it turns out they were/are excellent.

That brings me to how I became a member of the Beer of the Month Club. Every month when I would receive my monthly cigar shipment there was a brochure on their Beer of the Month Club. Well, after a few months of enjoying their cigars I opted to join the Beer of the Month Club. This time it was not a gift, I just joined on my own. I have given 2 Beer of the Month Club memberships as gifts to my sons and one to my next door neighbor since I joined but that's another story. When I initially joined I only joined for 3 months because I wasn't convinced the membership would be worth it and I figured a 3 month trial would let me make a good decision later. I have since upgraded my membership to their 12 month membership because it saves me some money.

Every month I receive 12 micro brewed beers. The brews are well packaged in a sort of Styrofoam cooler and I have never had a broken bottle in any of my shipments.

Each shipment I receive contains 4 different beers, so I receive 3 beers from 4 different locations/micro breweries. The beers come from micro breweries located all over the United States. My overall experience with the quality and taste has been excellent. I'm not a huge fan of really dark beers and when I receive a shipment that has 3 of those beers in it, I put them aside to give to my son who loves dark beers (a bonus for him).

Each shipment comes with a short newsletter with information about the beers, the breweries and some general interest information. I'm not a 'beer snob' but I do find the information in the newsletters interesting to read.

They claim the beers are from small micro breweries and they are all 'hard to find' beers. I can attest to the 'hard to find' part. In one shipment I really liked one of the varieties and decided I wanted more of it for a party we were planning. After going to all of my local liquor stores and coming up empty handed, I ended up calling the brewery (they were in Texas). They explained that they only ship within Texas.

I ended up ordering more of the beer from the Beer of the Month Club. They send a coupon with every shipment where you can buy more of the beers if you liked them. They also include a discount coupon too. I was convinced I could buy the beer cheaper by going directly to the brewery but that was not the case. By the time the bar had quoted me the price and the shipping costs, using the monthly coupon was actually a lot cheaper. Plus I had some reservations about the bar actually shipping and properly packaging the beer.

According to their newsletters, they utilize a group of beer experts who determine which beers are shipped to their members. That's a job I would like to have. So far I really like what their 'experts' have selected.

Here's a list of some of the beers I have received so far along with my thoughts about the brew. I have received a lot more than this but these are the ones I can remember off the top of my head:

  • Local Color’s Smooth Talker Pilsner (A really good pilsner)
  • Snake River’s Lager (I'm not a big lager fan but my son enjoyed them)
  • Butte Creek’s Winter Ale (Excellent, one of the best so far)
  • Great Divide’s Denver Pale Ale (Another good beer, went great with my Rocky Patel cigar)
  • Pony Express’ 75th Street Brown Ale (Strong flavor, dark, frothy and went well with my Diamond Crown Maximus cigar)
  • Rock Creek’s Devil’s Elbow India Pale Ale (I've come to enjoy India Pale Ales)
  • Coast Range’s California Blonde Ale (Fairly light for a pale ale but great flavor and a good head)
  • Rockies’ Amber Ale (Happens to be one of my favorites now)

According to their newsletter, they have been in business for nearly 20 years. They apparently know what they are doing, my shipments always arrive around the 12th of the month (within a day of two). I have to admit that I look forward to receiving the beer.

I like to drink beer when it's hot and since I live in Florida that's not a problem for me. For those of you unfortunate enough to not be living in the Sunshine State, I'm guessing you will not drink your beer as quickly as I do.

I really enjoy my membership and really enjoy the wide variety of beers they ship to me. For me, my cigars and my beers are a great combination.
